Urinary incontinence is the accidental involuntary leakage of urine. Being able to hold ones urine depends on the normal function of the bladder and urethra as well as normal neurologic reflexes. It also depends on the functional and cognitive ability to urinate voluntarily. When there is a problem in any of these areas, urinary incontinence can occur. There are three main types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge and mixed incontinence. Urge incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine related to urgency. Women with urge incontinence will often report not being able to reach the toilet in time when they have the urge to urinate.
