Chronic Vaginitis

Chronic vaginitis is an inflammation or infection of the vagina and may include symptoms like vulvar or vaginal itching, burning, irritation, pain with intercourse, and abnormal vaginal odor and/or discharge. The most common causes of chronic vaginitis are more likely due to inflammation as opposed to infection. Causes of chronic inflammation include exposure to contact irritants (douches, perfumed soap, scented detergent, spermicidal product) and postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis which may occur due to low estrogen levels. Infectious causes of vaginitis like bacterial vaginosis and vaginal yeast infection have a greater than 50 percent recurrence rate within the year and may require a longer course of treatment.
