Group B Streptococcus (GBS)

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a bacteria that normally lives in the digestive tract. However, 25% of women also carry or are colonized with the bacteria in the vagina. Because this colonization does not mean infection for the woman, there may be no symptoms and screening for the bacteria is important during pregnancy. Group B strep can lead to a serious infection in the baby during labor. To prevent this, women who test positive for group B strep should be treated with IV antibiotics during labor.
