Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for at least the first six months of life and partial breastfeeding is recommended for at least 12 months. Breastfeeding is beneficial for both mother and baby. Breast milk is the ideal food for infants, providing the nutrition the baby needs in its first year of life. It is known to contain antibodies that protect the newborn infant from infection. The benefits of breastfeeding extend beyond the early years. Breastfed children are less likely to be overweight or obese later in life. They are less prone to develop ear infections, asthma, diabetes, and childhood leukemia. The benefits extend to the mother in that women who breastfeed have a lower risk for diabetes, heart disease, postpartum depression, breast and ovarian cancer. Most importantly, breastfeeding allows for bonding between mother and baby.
