Fibroids

Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are noncancerous smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. They are very common and during the childbearing years, the incidence can range from 30 to 70 percent. Most women who have fibroids do not necessarily have symptoms and are unaware of their presence. In asymptomatic women, the fibroids are often discovered during a pelvic exam or pelvic ultrasound. Some women will experience symptoms such as heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, incomplete emptying of the bladder, or constipation. Fibroids can also lead to problems with fertility and pregnancy in some women.
