Irregular Menstrual Bleeding

Irregular menstrual bleeding, or abnormal uterine bleeding, includes any of the following: heavy bleeding during menstrual cycles lasting more than 7 days or soaking through one or more pads every hour, bleeding between periods, bleeding or spotting after intercourse, menstrual cycles with intervals longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days, skipping periods for longer than 3 months, or bleeding after menopause. There are many causes of irregular menstrual bleeding with the most common being ovulatory problems due to conditions such as menarche, perimenopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, stress and lifestyle factors. Other causes include, but are not limited to: endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic or Abnormal Pregnancy, bleeding disorders, and endometrial cancer. Medications such as hormonal birth control, blood thinners, IUDs can cause irregular bleeding as well.
